On Thursday, September 5th, the Skygate Car Park at Brisbane Airport was transformed into a beacon of unity and hope as we hosted the 2024 Live Like Her Challenge. With over 400 participants joining us, this event was more than just a gathering; it was a profound demonstration of our collective commitment to supporting women over 55 who are experiencing homelessness.
The evening was both moving and inspiring. We all were deeply touched by the sight of so many people coming together with a shared purpose to uplift those who are often overlooked in our society. The Live Like Her Challenge illuminated the real-life struggles faced by these women—who could be our daughters, mothers, sisters, aunties, or friends—and reinforced the urgent need for continued support.
The night began with a touching Welcome to Country by Waveney Yasso, a proud Yuwi Burra and South Sea Island descendant who calls Meanjin home. Waveney’s performance, rich in cultural heritage, set a powerful tone for the evening and reminded us of our deep connections with each other and the land.
Nina, Lady Mayoress of Brisbane and Chair of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust, and patron for The Forgotten Women captured the spirit of the night with her impactful words: “Tonight, we’ve sent a strong message of their value to our society—that we see them, love them, care for them, and are committed to changing their circumstances.” Our CEO, Teresa, also shared a moving reminder of the difference we can make: “Even a small contribution can have a huge impact.”
Thanks to the generosity and support of everyone involved, an astounding $ 346,243 has been raised. This incredible achievement not only reflects the success of the event but also the powerful impact of our collective efforts. The funds raised go directly to The Forgotten Women to provide essential services and stable, safe housing for older women experiencing homelessness, making a significant difference in their lives.
As we all look ahead, we are excited about the future and the opportunities to build on this success. Stay connected with The Forgotten Women for updates on upcoming events and ways to get involved.
